Bulgarian vs Saiga
Been thinking very seriously about picking up another AK. I've pretty much narrowed down the choices to either a Bulgarian or a converted Saiga in 7.62x39. Which do you like? Anyone had any time behind both?

Re: Bulgarian vs Saiga
Russian-built Saigas are solid, one of the more accurate Kalashnikov-types, in any caliber. But, I choose not to convert them to pistol grip configuration because I like the fast-handling aspects of the carbine/rifle. Mags are a bit of an issue with them...pricey...steel or poly. But the cost of the firearm itself is low, and you could afford to spend the savings on extra mags or convert to pistol grip config...or even another Saiga in a different caliber and have more calibers covered for less money.
I do hear of some issues with converted Saigas not functioning properly (do-it-yourself jobs)...hammer hanging up the bolt, fail to cycle properly, etc. A good reason to have it professionally done by someone like Tony Rumore of Tromix. Another thing, I prefer dimpled receivers (hold standard AK mag tighter) and you won't find many Saigas with that type, so it's another consideration when converting. Bulgarians are one of the best traditional AKs, IMO, especially milled receiver...nicely fitted and have good combat accuracy, but are a little more difficult to find as Arsenal seems to only put out a batch when it suits them. You will probably pay at least twice as much for the Bulgarian Arsenal than the Saiga, but then cheap mags won't be an issue. One solution is to buy a Saiga and a Bulgarian--if you can afford it--try them out, sell the one you like the least...or keep them both. FYI, Chet Durda of Lancaster Consulting says he is importing 10,000 Bulgarian AK-74s in a couple of months... |
